The Middle Lamina — One Key to Feeling Whole

“Actual manipulative work with fascia calls to mind the lowly onion. Layer lies within layer.
Deeper layers can be affected only as more superficial ones lose the rigidity that is the signature of imbalance.” Ida Rolf

Beneath the superficial fascia of the neck lie three primary fascial laminae enveloping distinct muscle groups: the superficial lamina, the middle lamina, and the deep lamina. In an ideal world, there would be a certain amount of smooth glide between these layers.

Using Prof. Carla Stecco’s Functional Atlas of the Human Fascial System as our guide, this hands-on seminar will explore how these 'onion layers' continue and connect throughout the upper body.

In this seminar, you will

  • Learn about "lamina thinking" and develop "lamina awareness".
  • Explore the anatomical pathways of the laminae.
  • Analyze how improved glide between the laminae influences movement and posture.
  • Investigate techniques for applying this knowledge in sessions of both the Basic Series and Advanced Work.
  • Practice how increasing awareness of these laminae can open the door to experiencing and cultivating what Ida Rolf referred to as the "Line".
  • Understand how activating movement of the middle lamina, in particular, can open new possibilities for the organism and help create a sense of wholeness.
